What is ‘Ihsaan’?

Then he (the man) said, "Inform me about Ihsan." He (the Messenger of Allah) answered, "It is that you should serve Allah as though you could see Him, for though you cannot see Him yet (know that) He sees you." (Sahih Muslim)

‘Ihsaan’ comes from the same root words as ‘husn’ and implies among other things perfection, beauty, God-consciousness and excellent character. Allah loves the muhsineen (those who do ihsaan)!

We nurture ihsaan by reading His book, loving and following the Messenger (saws), and becoming cognizant of the Majesty of His creation.

I started my journey as an artist in Pakistan where I specialized in watercolor painting of landscapes and still lives, and then ventured into modern Arabic calligraphy. As a student of knowledge, my love for the beauty of the Words of Allah grew, and naturally, as an artist, I picked up my paintbrush to express it.

The Art of Ihsaan is a fusion of the Arabic script of the Words of the Quran and landscape painting. It is not a random fusion of verses of the Quran and landscapes, but rather a very reflective and deliberate combination that is created after much thought and study. Sometimes the words become a part of the landscape, sometimes they are artfully incorporated within the trees and branches, and at other times they float effortlessly within it. In my Art of Ihsaan Community (online and on-site), I invite others to share in this deeply spiritual and relaxing experience of interacting with the verses of the Quran as we paint, reflect and relax together.
